Helping a Child Understand!

I now offer tutoring in Elementary though High School in Math, Science, History, Writing, Reading, as well as tennis and chess for enrichment.

I spent years teaching children and have extensive real world experience with business and engineering.  I have taught in both the US and early childhood in Great Britain.  That includes teaching from elementary school, junior high science on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and High School.  Naturally I have run after school music programs and for younger children rhythm ensembles.  I was an adjunct professor at Fordham University for over 5 years and have taught at other colleges and in industry.

Usually to  problem is that Children don't understand the concept of what they are learning.  It's not their fault, they are generally taught a fact and then quizzed on it.  Without understanding any learning is fleeting.

Once a student understands a concept, it is easy to learn.  Sadly, with no child left behind teachers usually don't teach concepts, just provide a set of fact and answers for the test.  This student will be hopelessly confused.

By first understanding the concept of what one learns, it is easy to examine some simple examples to  demonstrate understanding.  This is a child that will have confidence and learning will be easy.  Now it makes sense.

READING AND WRITING:

I have a program designed to improve a child's love for reading, and it has been proven that the best way to improve one's writing is to write about what one has read.  First I bring out their natural talents and tell them NOT to worry about any kind of mistakes.  Than we review and correct THEIR writing and they create a final copy.  The other benefit is they write about what they learned from their reading so their general knowledge goes way up.

I use a token economy to help build the joys of reading and writing.   I  brought an entire third grade class in one year from reading on grade level to an average reading level of 8th grade.   I recieved many compliments as the system greatly increased the students love of reading.

Reading is fundamental for success in all academic and professional pursuits.

MATH:

Most students have a scattering of knowledge when it comes to math, many holes and lack of understanding.  I offer a special package that reviews math from the basics sequentially going through all the way through high school math.  I use specific material which provides step by step examples and practice.  Often in school their mind drifts and they miss a step.  This way they do not miss a step and get lost.

For students preparing for the SATS, after 13 one hoursessions, you can expect to raise your math score at least 100 points.  I've had students raise their GRE Math Scores over 250 points after 13 sessions.

The change will be permanent as they wil understand math, not simply memorizing a bunch of steps.

I have many years of teaching experience and I love teaching.

Most importantly, I will help your child obtain a positive attitude about the subject.  Once they understand the concept of what they are doing, they will gain confidence and achievment will be simple.
